In December

Days shorten toward the deepest night
Sleep beckons with surcease from pain
Life dimming, leaving with the light
Not even memories remain.

Each day’s awakening renews
a world filled with ghosts and shadows.
Past and present and past confuse,
Backward, forward, time circles, flows.

Tangles and plaques invade his brain,
Synapses flicker off and on.
Hope for comfort, watch the light wane;
Winter deepens, spring will not dawn.
